In 2017 Ecopark Vaya continued its work to preserve valuable wet habitats and the species that depend on them. Among the plants that deserve special attention is the summer snowflake.

The summer snowflake is one of the most beautiful and recognisable plants of the wetlands. It is found in marshy places, along rivers, lakes, canals and floodplains, where the soil stays moist for much of the year. Its delicate appearance is often misleading, because this plant is closely tied to the health of the whole aquatic environment.

It flowers early in spring and is one of the first signs of nature awakening after winter. In wet areas the summer snowflake is not just a pretty flower. Its presence shows that the habitat has kept its natural character, that the water regime is right and that the soil and plant environment still support living conditions for a range of other species.

In 2017 Ecopark Vaya undertook activities to preserve the places suitable for the summer snowflake to grow. The main emphasis was on protecting the wet areas, limiting unnecessary interference with the natural vegetation and maintaining the natural conditions on which this species depends.

The summer snowflake has an important place in the natural picture of the wetlands. It is part of the plant communities that stabilise the banks, hold moisture and create an environment for insects, amphibians, birds and other organisms. When such plants disappear, it is often a sign that the habitat is changing for the worse – through drainage, pollution or the destruction of the natural vegetation.

Caring for the summer snowflake is part of Ecopark Vaya’s wider mission to protect wetlands as a living, interconnected system. In these places every plant matters. It holds the soil, retains the water, provides shelter and takes part in the natural balance that makes wet habitats so valuable.

The activity was carried out with our own funds, volunteer work and constant care in the field. It is part of Ecopark Vaya’s consistent efforts to preserve not only the visible and well-known animals, but also the plants that form the foundation of their home.

Today the summer snowflake remains a symbol of the preserved wetland, of spring renewal and of the quiet but extremely important work of protecting nature. It reminds us that the beauty of a place often begins with its most delicate inhabitants.
